Out and about
- East Budleigh is a very friendly rural village. The East Budleigh Tennis Club welcomes visitors, there is a well-stocked village shop run by volunteers who bake cakes for sale on a Saturday morning.
- From the cottage there are paths to Otterton(one mile) where the mill still grinds flour and there is an excellent bakery, restaurant and craft gallery. A lovely place for a coffee/tea and cakes. The Mill also hosts music evenings.
- The Otter Estuary Nature Reserve, with its abundant birdlife is 20 minutes walk. Popular with birdwatchers who frequent the hides on either side of the river.
- Jasmine Cottage also makes a great base for a beach holiday, being less than two miles from the coast where the River Otter meets the sea at Budleigh Salterton and its famous pebble beach. Swimming off the Devon coast you may be lucky enough to be joined by dolphin George or one of his pod. Fishing, kayaking, sailing, and any other messing about on the water is very popular, as is scuba diving and snorkeling
- The sandy beaches of Exmouth are approximately 4 miles away with access to boat hire and watersports. The regency town of Sidmouth is also just 5 miles away with pedalos etc. for hire and deckchairs on the promenade.
- The impressive botanical gardens of Bicton Park with its historic glasshouses, countryside museum, miniature railway and restaurant are less than a mile away.
- Jasmine Cottage is ideally located for walking the world's first World Heritage Site - the Jurassic Coast. The Jurassic Coast has spectacular cliffs which span 185 thousand years of geological time. Fossil collection is a pastime here.
- Beer, Lyme Regis, Seaton and Branscombe are all interesting places to explore.
- There are numerous cycle routes in the area. As noted by cycle-route.com the recently opened Exe Estuary Cycle Route running north from Exmouth affords stunning views which you can also enjoy if you walk the route. There are ferries from Topsham to Turf Lock and from Exmouth to Starcross spanning the estuary and making interesting trips.
- The fine walled city of Exeter with its Roman origins, 12 miles away, has a cathedral, museum and underground passages to explore, as well as a wealth of High Street and independent stores
- Whatever time of year you visit there's always lots happening. For example - the Rotary Kite Festival and the Devon County Show in May, the Exmouth Festival running from the end of May through to the first week of June, the Gala Week at Budleigh Salterton in June, the Budleigh Salterton Music and Arts Festival in July, the Budleigh Salterton Literary Festival in September.
- Budleigh, Exmouth and Sidmouth all have an excellent selection of interesting and diverse independant shops and hostelries. Bicton Park also has numerous public concerts.
